The History of the Shih Tzu

The Shih Tzu breed as we know it today is one that originated in China during the early 1800's.  Although there are early references to the breed, it was first shown in China as the Lhassa Terrior and Tibetan Poodle.  It slowly grew in popularity to be called the Lhassa Lion Dog during the early 1900's.  In 1935, after a ruling that Lhasa Apsos and Shih Tzu were different breeds, the Shih Tzu Club of England was formed.  From there the breed spread through other countries in Europe, Scandinavia, and even to Australia. 

During World War 2, the United States forces came across the Shih Tzu breed and brought it back to the US.  Since then the dogs popularity had soared.  Shih Tzu's were first acknowledged in the United States by the AKC in 1969 after a wave of popularity struck the breed.  The breed has continued to grow in popularity since, quickly becoming one of the most sought-after toy groups.
